Host: My first question is on the name of this new version. I’ve noticed that every iteration of TRON’s MainNet comes with an interesting name. The upcoming TRON 4.0 is named “The Great Voyage”, following “Odyssey” of the last version. So what are the meanings or stories behind these names?

Justin Sun: The first Great Voyage in history helped humans expand their physical space, such as the discovery of the Americas. The Great Voyage therefore represents exploration and pioneering, hence the name of TRON’s upgrade this time. This iteration further integrates blockchain technology into the daily life of individuals and enterprises. I personally believe the significance of TRON 4.0 may even outweigh the first Great Voyage in history.

Odyssey also has its implication. It was a Greek epic poem traditionally ascribed to Homer, describing the travels of Odysseus, a brave, smart and great soldier, during his years of wandering after the fall of Troy. He eventually returned home to Ithaca. Odyssey therefore somewhat represents wisdom, bravery, luck and more, which echoes TRON’s growth all the way from a startup.

Host: Thank you for your interesting interpretation, Justin! Moving on to the second question, as an upgrade that marks a significant milestone in the blockchain sector, what new breakthroughs does TRON 4.0 make and how will it usher the blockchain industry into a new chapter?

Justin Sun: As I have spelled out in my open letter to the community, TRON 4.0 upgrade covers the following four aspects:

First and foremost, we achieved the first smart contract virtual machine that supports privacy computation in human history. It is also the safest, most productive and most energy-efficient privacy protocol at the moment, giving developers more possibilities in choosing protocols while keeping the operation of TRX compliant with regulations.

Second, we gave a huge upgrade to TPOS consensus mechanism, combining the advantages of DPoS and PBFT, which greatly reduces the block confirmation time and enhances the integrity of the blockchain. This upgrade improves TRON’s TPS and enhances its safety, making it stand out among the other public chains.

Also, we introduced the brand new TICP cross-chain protocol, ushering TRON protocol into a cross-chain era. In addition, the team at TRON will open up three public chain slots, and we welcome the participation from developers all over the world to contribute to advancing cross-chain technology.

Last but not least, we have successfully developed a business-level universal development framework. Financial institutions and business developers will be able to swiftly deploy a new, customized application chain based on their own business scenarios, greatly reducing time and cost and enter a new stage of blockchain even faster.

Next question: TRON achieved the first smart contract virtual machine that supports privacy computation in human history, could you tell us what makes TRONZ privacy technology deserve such title and what preparations have you made to realize that goal?

Justin Sun: Let me explain this from a technical perspective. The core of TRONZ smart contract privacy protocol is “zk-SNARKs technology”. It’s an important branch of cryptography that allows provers to convince verifiers about the validity of an argument without disclosing any confidential information.

Compared with Monero and Zcash, the more user-friendly TRONZ smart contract privacy protocol can meet users’ customized needs for privacy protection and grant privacy rights back to users themselves. This technology represents the first major breakthrough for smart contract virtual machine that supports privacy computation, marking a significant moment in the history of blockchain.

In particular, the TRONZ team from the TRON community kicked off the MPC Torch Project as early as this January, drawing great attention from the world. So far, as many as 196 blockchain enthusiasts from different countries and industries have participated in the project, making it the world’s largest MPC event ever. MPC Torch Project not only guarantees the credibility of TVM zk-SNARKS command, but also makes great contributions to the blockchain privacy-protection technology. As the MPC is about to come to a close, TRON privacy protocol has chosen the hash of the 632800th bitcoin block as a seed to generate the random beacon, so that the last participant won’t be able to launch a security attack by selecting a specific parameter.

Host: After this upgrade, TRON will adopt a TPoS consensus mechanism. Could you briefly introduce it to us?

Justin Sun: TPOS is a new “DPoS+PBFT” dual-layer consensus mechanism. I would say it’s the most efficient, advanced and powerful consensus mechanism among all blockchains. DPoS ensures high TPS, while PBFT consensus mechanism enables fast block confirmation. The two combined will deliver high TPS and cut the time for block confirmation while significantly boosting the operational efficiency of blockchain as a whole.

It’s also worth noting that the new TPOS consensus mechanism guarantees the security of the cross-chain protocol, which uses SPV to confirm whether a cross-chain transaction is recorded on-chain. The key to implementing SPV is to know all the SRs who are producing blocks during current epoch and whether the current block has been confirmed without actually executing the transaction. The new consensus mechanism helps address these pain points and maintain the smooth operation of cross-chain protocol.

TPOS는 새로운 “DPoS + PBFT” 듀얼 레이어 컨센서스 메커니즘입니다. 모든 블록체인 중에서 가장 효율적이고 고급이며 강력한 합의 메커니즘이라고 할수 있습니다. DPoS는 높은 TPS를 보장하고 PBFT 합의 메커니즘은 빠른 블록 확인을 가능하게합니다. 이 두 가지 결합은 높은 TPS를 제공하고 블록확인 시간을 줄이면서 블록체인의 운영 효율성을 크게 향상시킵니다.

Host: The major performance flaws in PoW has forced Ethereum to shift to PoS consensus mechanism. TRON, on the other hand, made the far-sighted move to adopt the DPoS mechanism since long ago. What’s your foresight this time behind the upgrade of TRON 4.0, which will adopt a TPOS consensus mechanism?

Justin Sun: The problem of PoS is that most token holders lack the expertise and funds needed for installing the required hardware and software as competent nodes. Hence the birth of DPOS (Delegated Proof of Stake), a voting-based consensus algorithm that works like a democratic assembly, where token holders elect several delegates to run the network in a safe and healthy way with well-performing network servers. With DPoS mechanism, instead of having to solve math problems using computing power, token holders vote to elect block producers who may also be voted out anytime for incompetency, thus immunized from any performance flaws as occurred in PoS.

In TRON 4.0 we combined the advantages of DPoS and PBFT, which greatly reduces the block confirmation time from 57s to 3s and enhances the integrity of the blockchain. This upgrade improves TRON’s TPS and enhances its safety, making it a better option than Ethereum.

Host: Tron 4.0 upgrade coincides with Ethereum 2.0. Out of 10, what grade would you give to the two upgrades and why?

As late comers in the smartphone market, Oppo and Vivo still have many strengths against Apple. And TRON is the Oppo or Vivo in the blockchain industry. Those who have been closely following us might have noticed the biggest-ever poll in the crypto business that I started on Twitter last month on TRON 4.0 vs Ethereum 2.0. TRON 4.0 led the poll with 52% votes among over 100K participants! What really matters is not my score, but people’s vote.

Host: What’s your thought on the long delay of Ethereum 2.0 upgrade?

Justin Sun: In my humble opinion, Ethereum has been stuck in the endless congestion after developers flocked exponentially. A TPS of 20 can barely afford such a large market demand. Their upgrade has also been hindered by miners’ exodus, lack of confidence from investors, teams without unity and many other thorny issues. Time is running out for Ethereum. Of course, as a peer public chain, we will learn from the many problems and bottlenecks faced by Ethereum. TRON 4.0 wouldn’t have been released on time without the hard work of the entire TRON team.

Host: TRON started out three years later than Ethereum, but it has been growing on all fronts at a fast pace and won support from more and more community members. Would you feel more pressure? What do you think of the competition between TRON and Ethereum today? What is the core competency of TRON?

Justin Sun: We have to admit that the public chain segment changes very fast. We at TRON never get slack at our work for a single second. That is why TRON has achieved much more than Ethereum in fewer years.

First is DApp. Ethereum has almost given it up while TRON is gaining more and more developers. A high performing TRON main chain equipped with quality native DApps will draw more users to its MainNet. TRON owns an ecosystem.

Next is DeFi. Although TRON and Ethereum both have sound USDT ecosystems, a large number of users have been attracted by TRON’s low-fee, fast-transfer TRC20-USDT with over 2.5 billion circulation. Further, the stablecoin lending platform JUST issued on TRON network the month before last has injected vitality to TRON’s DeFi system.

Particularly, Ethereum is a stand-alone blockchain ecosystem while TRON has integrated BitTorrent, the largest decentralized ecosystem in the world with a huge user base. Its products like BTFS, BitTorrent Speed and DLive have employed the BTT token economy, making it the TRON-made most successful blockchain-empowered business.

In addition, Ethereum updates twice a year, while TRON is making rapid progress in its development. TRON 4.0 will integrate zk-SNARKS into its network ahead of Ethereum. More possibilities are to be unlocked with TRON’s cross-chain protocol, strategic partnership with SAMSUNG and with Poloniex and other exchanges, all contributing to securing a bright future for TRON ecosystem.

TRON’s core competency has always been its strong technology basis. It is exactly its high-throughput, scalability and high-availability that foster TRON’s prosperous ecosystem and the upcoming TRON 4.0 upgrade.

Host: TRON is one of the few companies in the industry that have stayed down to earth, conscientious and responsible in delivering its strategies. So what are TRON’s future plans? Can you tell us about TRON’s “big-picture strategy”?

So far, TRON network has gone through three major iterations and the fourth upgrade will be completed on July 7, 2020 (SGT). TRON 4.0 is significant in that it marks not only the successful conclusion of Odyssey Era and the official start of Great Voyage Era, but also TRON’s continued expedition into the next unknown territory.

Justin Sun: Apart from the MainNet 4.0 upgrade, TRON is also advancing its DeFi development this year to encourage more decentralized financial platforms to join the ecosystem. We’ve established a strategic partnership with Poloniex. Starting from June 11, 2020, a new fee policy is implemented so that users can pay transaction fees with TRX for spot and margin trading and enjoy 25% off. Poloniex will also roll out a brand-new tiered fee schedule. Users holding $49 worth of TRX in their Poloniex account are eligible for the discounted fee even when they trade no more than $50,000 in 30 days. In this way, we encourage more people to trade on Poloniex.

BitTorrent ecosystem maintains a steady growth. BTFS’s integration with BTT token economy brings about concrete benefits to users. DLive is also perfecting its Staking feature. Currently, the number of BTT staked on DLive has exceeded 18 billion and on June 12, BTT was listed on India’s №1 exchange WazirX! Looking ahead, we will move faster to launch iterations and updates.
